AzMarie at EMPIRE premiere party

Cue happy dance. Tonight at 9pm ET, FOX will premiere its new series EMPIRE, a hip hop/family drama that stars Taraji Henson, Terrence Howard, and inaugural ELIXHER Magazine cover girl, AzMarie. We’re psyched to learn that AzMarie’s character, Chicken, is queer. Chicken, who is a DJ, will make her first appearance in episode 2 and is part of eight episodes.

To add icing to this deliciously queer cake, cast, and crew (Jussie Smollet plays Jamal, Taraji and Terrence’s gay son, gay director Lee Daniels and The L Word‘s Ilene Chaiken are the creator and executive producer, respectively), AzMarie’s girlfriend Raven-Symoné also appears on the show. The two, however, have no interaction on screen, AzMarie tells AfterEllen.

We couldn’t dig up any spoilers (they’re keeping their lips sealed on this one!) but hopefully you won’t need them because you’ll be tuning in tonight and the following weeks. Check out the trailer below!

So like Nashville, but for hip hop. Yes! I already know that Taraji Henson’s role will be my favorite character.

Excited for AzMarie character of Chicken. I am so proud to have (several!) queer characters in an African American show! Can’t wait to watch tonight.
