On Thursday February 18, nearly 600 women and men gathered to celebrate the First Annual Professor Audre Lorde Memorial Birthday Celebration at Hunter College. It was a homecoming for Lorde, who died in 1992, and would’ve turned 82 years old this year: She graduated from Hunter College and taught in the English department for many years. Chirlane McCray, New York’s First Lady; performance artist Staceyann Chin; Dr. Gloria Joseph, Audre’s partner in the later years of her life; and Dr. Elizabeth Lorde-Rollins, Audre’s daughter, joined many others who offered poetry and remembrances.
The event also marked the launch of the new book The Wind Is Spirit: The Life, Love and Legacy of Audre Lorde by Dr. Joseph, who flew in from St. Croix. The book, a bio/anthology which includes over 50 contributors, is published by Villarosa Media. Unlike the many other books that examine Audre Lorde’s work, this “call and response” biography tells the great activist-poet’s story through the eyes of the many people who worked with her, knew her and loved her. Contributors include Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Jewelle Gomez, Johnnetta Cole and many others from St. Croix, Berlin and all over the world.
