Yaz’min Shancez, a 31-year-old transgender woman, was tragically found burned to death and hidden behind a dumpster last Thursday in Fort Myers, Florida. A vigil held on Sunday brought together approximately 200 people to honor her memory, reports TransGriot. Family, friends, and community members marched through Downtown Fort Myers and past the courthouse before arriving at Centennial Park. The march was organized by the Southwest Florida Equality Coalition and the Center of Southwest Florida.
Police are currently investigating the murder as a homicide. Investigators have stated that they have no indication that the disturbing act was a hate crime and motivated by anti-trans bias.
