Laverne Cox, star of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, has reportedly become the first transgender person to appear on the cover of TIME magazine.

Last month fans protested Cox’s omission from the TIME 100, a list of the 100 most influential people — even after she bumped pop singer Justin Bieber from the number one spot. In an earlier fan-voted poll on TIME’s site, 91.5% of respondents said the actress should be included on the magazine’s final list. Although public polls do not directly affect the editors’ final decision, readers were stunned at the glaring erasure.

Cox spoke with TIME for this week’s cover story, “The Transgender Tipping Point.” Check out the behind-the-scenes footage from her cover shoot.

A list of “21 Transgender People Who Influenced American Culture” also appears on the publication’s site. The list includes notables such as athlete Kye Allums, model Carmen Carrera, mixed martial arts fighter Fallon Fox, model Isis King, author Janet Mock and more.
