THEESatisfaction Premieres Official Video for “Recognition”

Queer music duo THEESatisfaction returns with the official video for “Recognition” from their forthcoming EarthEE LP directed by Tiona McClodden and produced by Allison McDaniel for Harriet’s Gun Media.

“The clip is a statement of empowerment and act of divination that finds the duo standing in repose at the resting places and former residences of some of the most revered names in the African American artistic canon,” writes Karas Lamb for OkayPlayer. “Seeking communion with the spirits of their forebears, THEESatisfaction visit the Rivers Cosmogram by artist Houston Conwill at the Schomburg Center in Harlem (where a portion of Langston Hughes ashes are interred), before passing through the Philadelphia homes of John Coltrane, Sun-Ra and Marian Anderson in a series of movements that combine with a mystic drum sequence to suggest the black magic traditions of trance and time travel.”


Whitney Actress Yolonda Ross on Rumored Lesbian Relationship

Lifetime’s Whitney biopic, which premieres January 17 at 8pm ET, will not only focus Whitney Houston’s rise to fame and turbulent relationship with husband Bobby Brown. We’ll also get a look at the late singer’s relationship with best friend and rumored lover, Robyn Crawford. According to AfterEllen, some reviews play up the romantic connection and actress Yolonda Ross who plays Robyn says people are missing the point. “I guess what’s missing is that whether or not they were in a relationship or not, they cared for each other,” she shared.

Filmmaker Dee Rees Says BESSIE Starring Queen Latifah Is ‘Truth-Telling’


We’ve told you a bit about Queen Latifah’s upcoming role as queer blues singer Bessie Smith in her HBO biopic, The Empress of the Blues. AfterEllen recently caught up with the director, lesbian filmmaker Dee Rees (Pariah). Here’s some of what she had to say about the iconic musician (read the full interview here):

Bessie liked everything. She refused to take a box. I don’t want to give the movie away but you’ll be happy about Ma Rainey’s performance in the film. Everybody went there, and they lived both sides of them. It’s telling the truth of these Black queer women of the time who blazed trails for everyone else and were important politically and huge from a feminist perspective.
