With so many Black queer and trans women flourishing in entertainment, ELIXHER decided to bring you a weekly round up. Every weekend, you can find out what’s happening on television, in music and everywhere in between. This week’s installment features Empire‘s new lesbian storyline, Angel Haze’s breakup, and more.
FOX’s Empire Adds New Lesbian Storyline
If you’ve been tuning into Empire every week, you caught the new steamy storyline with Tiana, the hip-hop label’s hottest female artist. If not, here’s the rundown.
While the star was keeping up appearances with rapper Hakem as the industry’s “it” couple, it turns out Tiana was coming home to her model girlfriend. Hakem’s dad Lucious (played by Terrance Howard) convinces him to use this twist in his favor and play up Tiana’s secret relationship (which was leaked to the press) as him having two girlfriends. Insert major side-eye here.
Look, we get that celebs are sometimes coerced into hiding their identities and women often play into the hypersexualized lesbian lover to titillate the male gaze. Here’s to hoping Lee Daniels does something compelling with the plot and steers clear of the typical, problematic, and tired depictions of femme-presenting queer women of color on screen. (We can’t deny that we would’ve loved to see AzMarie’s queer character, Chicken, be Tiana’s love interest. A girl can dream…)
Angel Haze And Girlfriend Break Up
Rapper Angel Haze recently released a single dedicated to her boo Ireland Baldwin. “I think I’m obsessed with you. If the world was ending soon, I don’t think that I could take it,” she croons. “Yo, what’s the point in messing around, if we both know what we’ve found? Forever, baby, we could make it.”
The pair had us all swooning with their mushy Instagram posts, matching tatts, and rings. Apparently, right after the song was dropped, Ireland decided to call it quits. Autostraddle reports that Angel Haze tweeted (and then promptly deleted) the following late Tuesday night:
Then this the next morning:
We’re wishing Angel Haze the best. Listen to her pour out her heart here.
