In a very tongue-in-cheek yet teachable interview with Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert, Redefining Realness author Janet Mock expanded on her heated interview with Piers Morgan and the challenges facing the transgender community.
Colbert jokingly referred to Mock as a “Piers Morgan abuser” and provided the trans advocate with a red buzzer that when pressed played a recording of Mock saying “Get it the f&^% together!” (a reference to a tweet she directed at Morgan when her interview aired). Colbert ended up being the one humorously hitting the button instead of his guest.
The two talked about everything from access to medical care to appropriate gender identity terminology.
“But ‘assigned male at birth,’ if I have a baby and I see, uh, certain genitals…I don’t want to get into any of the rough stuff…I might say that’s a boy. Am I doing the wrong thing by doing that? Should I just call the baby ‘it’ until it’s old enough to file its own taxes?” asked Colbert.
“Or ‘they’ or ‘my child’ or ‘my kid,'” Mock suggested smiling.
Nailed it. Check out the interview for yourself and tell us what you think!
