Margie Mitchell, 21, was hit by a vehicle in a parking lot outside the Birmingham, Alabama nightclub Ambitions at about 3 a.m. Sunday. Mitchell pushed her cousin, Destiny Lawson, out of the way just before being struck and run over by a white, four-door Lexus driven by a man they did not know. The driver of the car then backed up and ran Mitchell over again before leaving the parking lot, Lawson told The Anniston Star. Based on reports, it’s unclear whether the tragic incident was motivated by bias and how Mitchell personally identified.
She suffered spinal injuries, a broken pelvis, arm and ribs, and burns from the vehicle’s tires. Mitchell who is from Detroit, was celebrating her birthday with family and friends. It was her first time in Alabama. Mitchell underwent surgery on Monday and is in stable condition.
Lawson tells the local news outlet that there was a shooting outside the club just before the incident and that she didn’t know who was involved in the shooting or what transpired. According to two police reports, between 2:45 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday, two vehicles at the club were damaged after someone shot into them.
Family and friends are calling for justice and raising funds for Mitchell’s medical bills (she does not have health insurance). You can support Margie here. ELIXHER will continue to closely monitor this story. We wish Margie a speedy recovery.
